Yoga at Peyrat – where time slows down

The Seigneurie de Peyrat wine estate, just outside Pézenas, has been making wine and growing olives for centuries. Nestled in lush woodlands and surrounded by fertile vineyards, the estate provides a perfect idyl of natural calm – ideal for achieving greater ‘well-being’ through yoga.

Two women have made yoga here possible – Cécile Espada, owner of the estate and its chief wine-maker, and Olga Morineau, a russian yoga master now living in the region.

With the Seigneurie de Peyrat embarking on an ambitious program of new activities and adding new accommodation, this was the perfect time to introduce yoga courses.

Olga – the catalyst…

Olga has been giving yoga classes for many years now, and it’s something she’s clearly very passionate about. She was trained in a very pure Indian tradition (‘from master to student’) and continues her own growth in the field by visiting yoga masters all over the world. The approach of ‘master says, student learns’ isn’t one that Olga subscribes to. She prefers to think that both students and masters learn every day – it’s a two-way process, with each student grappling with different issues – be they health, fatigue, stress or grief – all of which can be tacked with stretching, exercise and meditation. The master imparts what they can to the student – who then gives something back in their own way. The most gratifying thing for Olga is witnessing the redressing of imbalances between our physical, psychic and emotional selves.

Olga’s philosophy, professionalism and approach to instruction inspired Cécile Espada, the owner of the Seigneurie de Peyrat, to launch Yoga at Peyrat courses – something she had been keen on doing for a while. The couses will be introduced not only at the Seigneurie de Peyrat, but also at the Couvent d’Hérépian boutique hotel and the Château de La Redorte vineyard resort – both chic holiday residences created and run by her husband Miguel Espada.

A key activity for visitors and residents alike in the the region

And why not? The vineyards and gardens that surround the Seigneurie de Peyrat are the perfect setting for Yoga lessons – where students can sit in the shade of umbrella pines and take in the sounds and smells of the Mediterranean all around them.

Olga and Cécile will be working together to make Yoga at Peyrat a huge success – attracting beginners and seasoned yoga practitioners alike to enjoy yoga in unique surroundings.

Rebalance and revigorate – twice a week

During the summer season (July and August), Olga offers classes every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm and every Friday from 8:45 to 10:15am. It’s a great opportunity to recharge your batteries. The courses are open to all, whatever your level. In small groups, you will learn postures (Asana), different breathing techniques (Pranayama) and how to better relax through meditation.

No goals, no competition, no challenges – other than to take the personal path that suits you and relieve your ills while optimizing your health. Olga is there to guide you, lead you in the right direction and give you the tools you need to advance.

“I’m as stiff as a board!”

Eventually, pretty much everyone ends up touching the floor with their legs outstretched – Olga is there to make sure of that. At first, many think it impossible – but with plenty of discipline, advice and practice, some get their quickly, some slowly. But most do get there at some point.

It isn’t just about relaxing and flexing

Yoga is used to combat all sorts of physical and psychological symptoms – be they a sore lower back or excess stress. Progress can be impressive and the results can speak for themselves in only a few sessions. Yoga for a new body – yoga for the mind – yoga for a new life – all achieveable when practiced with discipline and good instruction.

An art based in values and discipline.

No one gets anywhere without a little discipline and drive. There’s nothing magical about it – it’s just a question of learning how to do it and sticking at it. Practicing at home between sessions is also important. And in those sessions, you’ll find that some of the ideas behind yoga such as achieving stillness and connecting to your inner self start to take hold. Olga is always there to motivate and guide her students – to help them meet their own individual goals. She’s there to guide you through meditation (with her voice and soothing music) and help you improve your postures and movements with a gentle hand.

The Seigneurie de Peyrat – a place with soul

This family estate, consisting of a château, an enclosed forest, vegetable gardens, an olive grove, wild ‘garrigue’ and, of course, hectares of vineyards, is a haven of peace and tranquility. Elegant 17th Century architecture and a small chapel adorned with frescoes help to explain why Louis XIV and Cardinal Mazarin once stayed here. The history and natural beauty of Peyrat make it a place like no other in which to connect body and mind.
